Sourced from Alpha Estate’s renowned single‑vineyard “Hedgehog” site, this expressive Xinomavro showcases the character of vines planted in sandy‑clay soils over limestone, a combination that provides excellent drainage and contributes to the wine’s refined structure.
Alpha Estate’s Hedgehog Vineyard gets its name directly from the hedgehogs that naturally live and nest in the vineyard area. The winery confirms that this population of hedgehogs has been present there for many generations. The hedgehogs play an ecological role: they help control vineyard pests naturally, contributing to a healthier, more balanced vineyard environment.
The wine undergoes vinification in stainless steel before aging for 12 months in a mix of new and used French oak barriques, adding subtle depth and rounding its natural intensity.
In the glass, it presents a bright purple‑red color with a complex aroma profile of small red berries, leather, spice (vanilla, pepper, clove), and hints of ripe blackberry.
The palate is full and silky, offering rounded tannins, balanced acidity, and well‑integrated wood tones. A long, persistent finish carries an intense quince note, a hallmark of the vineyard’s expression.
This vintage also shows a lively, fresh demeanor with a delicate mid‑palate that expands gracefully, coating the palate with elegant texture.
